STATISTICS * USA - Large Truck Crashes Go Down, but Fatalities Increase

Pinon Hills,CA,USA -Best Syndication, by ePR Source -January 4, 2008: -- Over 140,000 large trucks were involved in accidents in the United States last year, an increase of over 20 % since 2002. These large truck accidents killed almost 5000 people in 2006, including 137 in Alabama... In Alabama, the total number of crashes has gone down steadily for the last several years, but, contrary to the overall national trend, fatalities have actually increased. In many cases these crashes and the resulting fatalities might have been avoided if proper maintenance had been conducted on the trucks' safety equipment before they were put on the road...

Dump trucks * USA - A load of aggravation for drivers

But their safety record’s not that bad, experts say

Fort Myers,FL,USA -The News Press, by Ed Johnson -July 29, 2007: -- ... Not one of the 179 dump truck crashes in Lee County in 2006. Not one of the county’s 121 road deaths, according to state records. It’s hard to hang around Alico Road and not hear complaints about the lumbering leviathans... Statewide, there were 395,696 traffic crashes in 2005, the last year for which complete statistics have been compiled. Those crashes accounted for 5,011 fatalities and 273,532 injuries. Heavy trucks, a category that includes dump trucks, accounted for 5,739 of those crashes, 171 fatalities and 3,358 injuries; just a small fraction of the highway carnage... Southwest Florida is a microcosm of the state. Dump truck accidents result in a relatively small number of deaths and injuries in the region. Still, Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Douglas W. Dodson said dump trucks are one of the lesser hazards on the road... Collisions Statistics * Canada - Road fatalities increase in 2005

Ottawa,Ont,CAN -Truck News, by James Menzies -2 Feb 2007: -- The number of fatalities on Canadian roads jumped 7% between 2004 and 2005, according to the latest Canadian Motor Vehicle Traffic Collisions Statistics... The increase in highway fatalities can be attributed to the increasing number of motorists. There are now more than 21.9 million licenced drivers in the country, the report shows. There were 786,000 commercial vehicles licensed in Canada in 2005, up from 752,000 the year before... Road fatalities represent more than 90% of all transportation-related deaths. Since 1982, road traffic deaths have declined by nearly 30%. There were 2,578 fatal crashes in 2005, resulting in 2,923 deaths on Canadian roads...
