GREEN ENGINES * USA: TRUCKMAKERS DULY APPLY IT

* New York - GHG Phase 2: The OEMs have stepped up

--- While the truck makers are keeping their some of their plans quiet about the technologies they plan to deploy to meet the anticipated Greenhouse Gas Phase 2 emissions standards, they are not just sitting idly by.

° International said it is “systematically taking weight out” of its platforms. Our Confidence Report on lightweighting found that for every 1,000 lbs. of weight reduction there is a 0.5% to 0.6% fuel economy savings.

° Kenworth is making its AeroAdvantage Fairing available as a factory-installed option for its T680 Advantage highway models with 76-in mid-roof sleepers. It is also expanding its auto/start stop system. In addition to preventing fuel gelling, systems like this also reduce idling by turning the main engine on and off as required for heating and cooling while the driver is resting.

° Mack is changing compression ratios on its engines to allow for more complete combustion and is offering a two-speed cooling pump. Combined the company said those things will increase fuel economy on its MP7 engine by 5.1% and on its MP8 engine by 5%. For its downspeeding tractor option Mack will offer the MP8 engine with a turbo compounding system that “converts waste energy from the exhaust to mechanical energy that is fed back to the engine.” The result is a fuel efficiency increase of 8.8%

° Volvo says it has retooled D11 engine offers a 2.2% fuel economy improvement over 2014 model. In the middle of 2017 Volvo will introduce an engine with turbo compounding and waste heat recovery.
... Many of the OEMs talked about their offering electronically controlled transmission choices which not only save fuel, according to our Confidence Report, but also aids with driver recruitment and retention and improve safety...

* California - Three-cylinder engine is making noise. Carmakers look to unleash fuel-efficient drive systems with surprising zip on U.S. market

(Photo: Toyota Ecoyota three cylinder 4 stroke aircraft)
Los Angeles,CAL,USA -Los Angeles Times, by Jerry Hirsch -April 5, 2012: -- Imagine a car that gets more than 40 mpg in everyday traffic and 50 on the highway. It isn't an expensive hybrid, and it doesn't require special fuel... Get ready for a new generation of cars equipped with surprisingly powerful three-cylinder engines that, according to early reviews out of Europe, have both the zip and zoom Americans expect in the four-cylinder compact sedans they buy today...

The Wave Disk Engine * USA - Cheap, Efficient, Clean, and Different

This small engine could be up to 3.5 times more efficient than the piston-driven engines

(Image: The New Scientist)
MICH,USA -The New Scientist/Gas 2.0 -March 21, 2011: -- The basic design of the internal combustion engine has not changed much in the last 100-something years. And the disk wave engine could be the answer to a future free of combustion engines... Developed by researchers at the Michigan State University, this small engine could be up to 3.5 times more efficient than the piston-driven engines found in most cars. How? Well the engine does away with those heavy pistons and replaces them with a single disk with small channels carved out to carry air and fuel…any fuel, from hydrogen to gas to biodiesel. The inside and outside edges of the disk alternately open and close to combine the air and fuel, and shockwaves produced from the rotation of the disk compress and ingite the combination. By hooking the engine up to a generator, you can produce electricity to feed the motor, while getting almost four times better gas mileage and producing 95% less carbon dioxides...
Considering that today’s most advanced, expensive, and efficient combustion engines only put out between 15% and 40% tops of the energy (fuel) put into them, an improvement of 3.5 times more efficiency would mean more power and more miles-per-gallon from an engine that is 20% smaller and estimated to cost just $500 for a unit large enough to power a car. And  turbine engines can achieve up to 70% energy efficiency….

"GREEN" NEWS * USA - EPA to fund projects aimed at diesel retrofits

Washington,D.C.,USA -The Trucker News Services -22 July 2008: -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said Monday it plans to award approximately $3.4 million in grants to establish projects using emerging technologies to reduce emissions from the nation's existing fleet of diesel engines. The existing fleet is important because it pre-dates EPA's stringent new particulate and nitrogen oxide standards and diesels remain in use for decades, the agency noted... The program was authorized by the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and funded for the first time this fiscal year... State, local, regional and tribal governments may apply for the grants, as well as non-profits and institutions with transportation, educational service, and air quality responsibilities. Emerging technology manufacturers must partner with an eligible applicant to receive this funding. The grants are targeting school or transit buses, medium and heavy-duty trucks, marine engines, locomotives and non-road engines. Grant proposals must be submitted by Sept. 21, 2008. The final awards will be announced in December... (Image: The grants will be administered by EPA's National Clean Diesel Campaign under the Emerging Technology Program (ETP). ETP supports the development and commercialization of new, cutting-edge technologies)

* USA - Will there be a ‘California’ engine?

To buy a truck certified to idle in California or have the manufacturer activate a five-minute limit on idling

CAL,USA -Land Line Magazine,by Charlie Morasch -November 15, 2007: --
Truckers weighing their options on buying new trucks or engines are facing a decision they’ve never before been forced to make... California is requiring that engines manufactured for model year 2008 and later have a shutoff function activated unless they meet a new standard of emitting no more than 30 grams of nitrogen oxides per hour while idling. Engines already have the capability to have the shutoff function activated, but California’s rule makes their activation mandatory for any truck that enters the state. State law also prohibits the shutoff functions from being manipulated at any time by the driver... Most or all truck manufacturers appear as though they’ll each have an engine certified to meet California’s clean idle standard, said Joe Suchecki, director of public affairs for Chicago-based Engine Manufacturer’s Association... Drivers would rather be able to idle their engines than have a mandatory engine shutoff system, Suchecki said... “Every manufacturer is going to try and have a low-NOx engine available simply because that’s thought to be the option most customers would prefer,” Suchecki said... Next year’s requirement for 2008 year truck engines has had as monumental an effect on new trucks as engine makers, Suchecki said. Engine makers have scrambled to meet environmental edicts approved first by California and mirrored by other states...
