A new report on the largest 50 US motor carriers gives some indication of how trucking is changing and where, and how fast... Start with a look at the top: of the five largest companies in this year’s ranking of the Top 50 US Trucking Companies, prepared for JOC.com by SJ Consulting Group, only two are a straightforward freight-hauling trucking companies — J.B. Hunt Transportation Services and YRC Worldwide... The three largest companies are UPS and FedEx, express package and logistics giants with industrial trucking subsidiaries, and XPO Logistics, a global logistics operator with LTL and last-mile trucking assets... Shipper demand for greater supply chain control, velocity, and visibility drove growth in dedicated trucking in 2016, and that also accounted for the increase in Top 50 revenue. J.B. Hunt and other trucking operators have been shifting more assets into dedicated service... In 2017 and beyond, shippers can expect the largest trucking operators to increasingly shift drivers, trucks and other resources toward integrated and specialized services that provide a pricing premium...
