CLEANER TRUCKS GRANTS * USA: At New Orleans Port

* New Orleans - Latest port to finance cleaner trucks

--- New Orleans has become the latest US port to launch a program to help drayage truck owners finance replacement of older vehicles with newer, less-polluting models... The port announced a Clean Truck Replacement Incentive Program (Clean TRIP), which will provide incentives for voluntary replacement of about 20 drayage trucks from the 1993-2006 model years with 2012 or later models... The scrap-and-replace program provides grants of 50 percent of the purchase price, or up to $35,000 per truck. The program is available to local short-haul truck owners that serve port cargo terminals and warehouses... This is the first such truck-replacement program at New Orleans. Several other US ports have conducted similar programs using federal grants... The port said it had no statistics on the number of pre-2007 trucks at the port. Port spokesperon Matt Gresham said trucks make an average of 2,300 trips a day through the port’s container terminal, for an average of 1,150 trucks in and out, but that many trucks make multiple turns during the day...
