One out of every 13 Iowans works in the trucking industry — that includes truck driving instructor Randy Grey, who is beginning to think about retirement — along with many other truck drivers in the state... The average age of an Iowan truck driver is 57, so trucking companies are working to bring in new drivers... Trucking companies in Iowa are changing the way potential hires look at the trucking business... Surveys from the Iowa Motor Carriers Foundation shows 73 percent of Iowans surveyed have a positive view of what has been a thriving business for the state... With programs offering truck driving certification opportunities, like those at North Iowa Area Community College, new faces are considering this as a career... And with nearly 12,000 registered Iowa companies that send truckers throughout the country, it’s no wonder why they want to keep the trucker momentum going... The staring salary for a truck driver in Iowa is $43,000 a year...
