--- Australian Trucking Associationn chief executive officer Christopher Melham said the ATA would use the campaign period to call on political parties and candidates to confirm they would not re-establish the RSRT. The TWU highlighted at the protest that in April 23 people died in truck crashes and in March there were 25 deaths, linking it to pressure caused by low pay rates...

...  "Truck drivers have a right to be safe at work and they have a right to be paid a minimum rate for all their work," TWU national secretary Tony Sheldon said. Sheldon says evidence from Safe Work Australia paints a clear picture, despite strong opposition from industry. "The evidence from Safe Work Australia clearly shows the pressure drivers are under: one in three transport employers say their workers break safety rules to get the job done," Sheldon said.

* ACT - ATA takes part in RSRT impact roundtable 

 --- The ATA this week took part in a roundtable convened by the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman Kate Carnell AO, to gather feedback ahead of the inquiry into the effect the Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal’s (RSRT) Payments Order had on small businesses... Ms Carnell said it was becoming clear there are owner-operators who continue to face significant financial hardship within an industry still plagued by uncertainty. She said the inquiry would seek to gather testimonials from as many owner-drivers as possible... “We want to consult as broadly as possible to make sure we get an accurate picture of exactly what’s going on. To do that, we need to hear from as many owner-drivers as we can, to learn directly from them about their experiences" ...
