* Texas - No shortage of small fleets, drivers, TIA chair Tucker says
-- Trucking companies may have trouble hiring and keeping truck drivers, but that doesn’t mean there’s a broad-based truck driver shortage, the chairman of the Transportation Intermediaries Association told members of the organization Friday. He said there is a shortage of drivers willing to work for the largest U.S. trucking companies... He believes truck drivers have been leaving big carriers to work for smaller fleets or go solo... Truck driver turnover at the largest U.S. truckload carriers rose from 84 percent in the first quarter of 2015 to 100 percent in the third quarter, the latest period for which data was available from the American Trucking Associations. The rate at smaller carriers dropped, however... QualifiedCarriers.com data shows the number of U.S. for-hire truck drivers increased from 1.9 million to 2.4 million over the last four years, a 21 percent increase. The number of active, for-hire carriers rose 38 percent, from about 150,000 in 2012 to 205,000 in early 2016... QualifiedCarriers.com obtains Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration motor carrier census data every month, and cross references that data with daily FMCSA carrier licensing feeds to quantify the number of active, for-hire carriers with required licensing and insurance... For-hire trucking employment declined for the second straight month in March, as carriers reported a loss of 2,400 jobs to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That could indicate a shift of truck drivers to higher paid work in construction as U.S. wages begin to climb more quickly...
