* New Jersey - What’s causing so many accidents on the Turnpike?

 -- 1 in 4 fatal crashes involve a heavy truck, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. But are trucks the main cause of most Turnpike accidents? ... Yesterday a truck crash on the NJ Turnpike caused a massive explosion and lane closures. Speeding is likely a popular cause related to the above statistic, but I asked callers to share their ideas as to what’s making this highway so dangerous... Steve, a trucker who called from Trenton, said many drivers play chicken with trucks. “They try to get around the truck before a construction zone begins,” he said. Carrying heavy loads prevents trucks from stopping quickly, and blind spots make the situation worse... Ro, a 29-year-old trucker, said he sees people texting and driving constantly, and this is making matters worse... Deloris from West Windsor pointed out that the 1 in 4 ratio seems normal when you consider there are more cars on the road than trucks. Dan from Princeton said a simple solution to this issue would be to use more trains to transport goods, thus freeing up our roadways...

 * Ohio - Truckers say it’s a challenge on the interstates

-- There have been three fatal crashes involving semis in interstate construction zones in the last two weeks. One truck driver faces charges... It’s an uneasy combination of cars, trucks and high speeds on local freeways. WKBN talked to truck drivers at Truck World on Wednesday about the difficulties they face on the roadways... Trucker Roger Radcliffe says it’s pretty basic. “People see trucks and they don’t want to be stuck behind a truck” ... Reginald Sojourner is an over the road driver from Brooklyn, New York. He delivers cheese on a daily 600 mile trip from Wisconsin to New York City. ” Truck drivers are constantly challenged by cars trying to jump in front of us as we slow down. It takes us a bit to slow down. So as we slow down cars try to take advantage of that. It makes me nervous that they’re in such a rush that they’re going to cause an accident and that’s more of the problem” ... Todd Rankin lives in Austintown, but makes his living hauling mail from Cleveland to New Jersey. Reginald wishes Ohio would copy what Pennsylvania does around construction zones. He says,”The state troopers are positioned a couple miles before the zone just so everybody slows down... Radcliffe figures a little cooperation is needed here, saying “Everybody is in a hurry. Just a little bit of patience. Get in line. Go right on through. It doesn’t matter where, construction or anywhere. A little of patience will go a long way” ...

* DC - Trucker exhaustion poses grave danger to US motorists, say labor experts

 -- Deadly accident involving comedian Tracy Morgan highlights long-standing safety concerns about trucking industry... Truck driver fatigue caused by working unpredictable schedules and unreasonably long hours places millions of U.S. motorists at risk each day, according to labor experts who pointed to the National Transportation Safety Board’s (NTSB) recent announcement that fatigue was to blame for an accident that killed comedian James McNair and critically injured fellow comedian Tracy Morgan last year... In June 2014 a Walmart truck slammed into a limousine van carrying the two men and five other passengers was driven by someone who had not slept in 28 hours, according to an NTSB report released Tuesday... Keith Holloway, a spokesman for the agency, told Al Jazeera in an email that exhaustion is a persistent danger for commercial truck drivers and those who share the road with them...
