POST STRIKE SOLUTION FOR TRUCKERS * USA: New short haul trucking company to give employees benefits
* California - Eco Flow Transportation hired 80 drivers during its first month and plans to build a staff of 500 in its first year
-- A newly formed short-haul trucking company serving the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach will give all of its drivers full employment status, rather than treat them as independent contractors, company and union officials said today... Eco Flow Transportation hired 80 drivers during its first month and plans to build a staff of 500 in its first year, under an agreement with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, according to a jointly released statement... The Teamsters labor union recently organized a multi-day strike by drivers who contend they were cheated out of pay by employers who misclassify them as independent contractors, rather than as full employees... Eco Flow executives pledged to stand apart from other companies in the drayage -- or short-haul -- industry, which tend to hire drivers as contractors. They also promised to help reduce congestion problems at the ports and to avoid pollution-emitting fuel sources such as diesel... Eco Flow is owned by Saybrook Logistics, which also owns Total Transportation Services, which was targeted last November by the Teamsters and picketing drivers who complained the company was wrongly classifying them as independent contractors...
