TRUCKERS' PROTEST * USA: Plan to keep tractor-trailers off streets

* North Carolina - Trucker protested Navassa's proposed ordinance

--  Tempers flared at the Navassa Town Council meeting this week as trucker after trucker protested Navassa's proposed ordinance to keep tractor-trailers off its streets... The ordinance would prevent tractor-trailers from traveling on most of the town's primary streets and connecting roads as well as ban parking and overnight parking. Truckers who violate the law could be fined up to $500...The truckers and other residents at Tuesday's meeting accused the council of interfering with people's livelihoods. Many of the truckers own their own tractor-trailers and park them on their own property. In their eyes, driving their trucks to and from their homes is equivalent to commuting to a business. Preventing truckers from getting to and from work, or charging them a high fine for doing so, interferes with their ability to make a living, they said. Other residents agreed with them... The truckers also said their trucks were not to blame for excessive road damage. Many other big trucks, such as the 18-wheelers that travel to the railroads daily and construction trucks, do as much damage to the roads as the residents' tractor-trailers, said trucker Jerry Merrick...
