* City of Beijing to legalize car pooling to ease traffic, pollution amid chronic smog

Beijing,China -HK Car World -2 June 20134: -- Beijing will become the first Chinese city to legalize car pools to ease traffic congestion and air pollution, according to Chinese media... The municipal government will lift the city's ban on car pools before the end of this year, reported Legal Evening News, a Beijing-based newspaper... Legalized car pools could eliminate 400,000 cars from Beijing's streets each day and reduce carbon monoxide emission by 30,000 tons each year, the newspaper reported... Car pools are illegal in China and motorists who defy the law are subject to hefty fines... As it lifts the ban on car pools, the city of Beijing will issue rules regulating the fees that a motorist can charge passengers, according to the newspaper... Beijing now has a fleet of 5 million passenger vehicles. For years, the city has suffered severe traffic congestion and air pollution caused by vehicle exhaust... The city has advised the young, elderly and ill residents to avoid outdoor activities this week, according to Bloomberg News... This weekend, the Beijing Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center recorded concentrations of fine air particulates that were more than 11 times higher than the World Health Organization's recommendation for maximum daily exposure...
