Brussels,Belgium -New Europe, by KARAFILLIS GIANNOULIS -April 16, 2013: -- The European Commission announced new EU rules today in order to promote the development of safer and more environmental lorries... European Commissioner for Transport, Siim Kallas commented, “a brick is the least aerodynamic shape you can imagine, that's why we need to improve the shape of the lorries on our roads. These changes make road transport cleaner and safer. They will reduce hauliers' fuel bills and give European manufacturers a head-start in designing the truck of the future, a greener truck for the global market” ... According to the Commission the main advantages of the proposal are:

(i) Better environmental performance, through the reduction of fuel consumption and the promotion of hybrid and electric lorries;
(ii) Better road safety since the new shape of the lorries will better the sideways visibility of the truck driver;
(iii) Lower fuel costs;
(iv) New industrial opportunities for lorries manufacturers, since the companies will produce new models;
(v) More consistent controls in order to avoid overloading, which according to the Commission is a very common phenomenon in the Internal market;
(vi) and Promoting intermodal transport through the red tape regulation...
