(Photo: The 2013 Buick Encore)
Washington,DC,USA -The Car Connection, by Viknesh VIJAYENTHIRAN - Apr 3, 2013: -- Buick has issued a recall on its Encore compact crossover because of a problem that could cause the steering wheel of some of the cars to come loose or even detach from the steering column... The recall only affects 2013 Encore crossovers built between December 9, 2012, and December 28, 2012, and then it’s only those versions equipped with a heated steering wheel... Buick says only 144 of its Encore crossovers are affected by the latest recall in the U.S.... Clearly, if the steering wheel separates from the steering column while driving, the ability to steer almost certainly will be lost, increasing the risk of a crash...

(Photo: The 2012 Lincoln MKS)
Washington,DC,USA -The Car Connection, by Suzanne Kane -Apr 3, 2013: -- Ford is conducting a voluntary safety recall of a small number of 2013 Explorer SUVs, 2012 Taurus and Lincoln MKS sedans over concerns their fuel tanks may leak and pose a fire risk... An official safety recall notice posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website puts the number of vehicles potentially affected by the recall in the U.S. at 3,037. Affected vehicles were built from July 19, 2011 through March 15, 2012... Documentation from Ford (PDF) submitted to the NHTSA said that the vehicles were all built at the company’s Chicago Auto Assembly plant. Some of the fuel tanks may have been manufactured with “inadequate” pressure, resulting in a “marginally sealed seam in the side of the tank” ... Ford said that some of the fuel tanks may not provide the expected strength in the event of an impact and also may leak fuel. The automaker said that it is not aware of any accidents, injuries or fires associated with this condition. The company has received warranty claims for some fuel tanks with either fuel odor or fuel leaks, both in the U.S. and in Saudi Arabia...

Washington,DC,USA -The Car Connection, by Suzanne Kane -Apr 3, 2013: -- In an action from the major electrical-problem recall announced this week by the automaker, Hyundai is also recalling certain 2011 through 2013 Elantra compact cars for a problem with airbags... An official safety recall notice posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website puts the number of vehicles potentially affected at 186,254. Another estimated 3,875 are affected in Puerto Rico. Affected vehicles were built from November 12, 2010 through March 5, 2013... At issue is a support bracket attached to the vehicle’s headliner that may become displaced during deployment of the side curtain airbag... Should the headliner support bracket make contact with an occupant in the event of a crash, it may result in a laceration injury...

(Photo: The 2011 Kia Sorrento)
Washington,DC,USA -The Car Connection, by Suzanne Kane -Apr 3, 2013: -- In the largest-ever recall affecting Korean automakers Hyundai and Kia, Hyundai is recalling more than one million vehicles for electrical problems, while its sister company, Kia, will recall some 623,000 vehicles to address the same problem... A Hyundai recall notice posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website puts the number of Hyundai vehicles potentially affected by the recall at 1,059,824... The Kia recall involves the 2007-2010 Rondo, 2007 Sedona, 2011 Optima, 2007-2011 Sorrento, 2010-2011 Soul and 2007-2010 Sportage...  Hyundai said the malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake light not to illuminate when the driver depresses the brake pedal. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch could also result in intermittent operation of the vehicle’s push-button start feature, affect operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock feature, prevent the shifter from being moved out of Park, and cause the electronic stability control (ESC) light to illuminate... Failure of stop lamps to illuminate during braking or the inability to disengage cruise control could increase the risk of a vehicle crash...

* DC - Subaru Legacy, outback recalled for possible brake line corrosion

(Photo: The 2009 Subaru Legacy)
Washington,DC,USA -The Car Connection, by Suzanne Kane -Apr 3, 2013: -- Subaru is recalling certain 2005 to 2009 model year Legacy and Outback vehicles, to check for possible corroded brake lines... An official safety recall notice posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website said the Subaru Legacy and Outback vehicles affected by the recall were manufactured from December 3, 2003 through April 2009... In documentation (PDF) submitted to the NHTSA, Subaru said that the exact number of vehicles affected by the recall will be determined after receipt of R. L. Polk registration information. A report in The Detroit News said that a Subaru spokesman wrote in an email that the company estimates about 200,000 vehicles are covered by the recall... The NHTSA bulletin said that “salt water could splash on the brake lines through a gap in the fuel tank protector, resulting in excessive corrosion of the brake lines” ...  Subaru said that its own investigation determined that brake lines “could perforate after exposure to 7 or more winter seasons,” and could eventually lead to brake fluid leaking... The potential consequence of brake fluid leakage is that the vehicle may require longer distance to slow down or stop. This increases crash risk...
