* Michigan - Pickups boost February auto sales 

Detroit,MICH,USA -The Detroit News, by Karl Henkel and Melissa Burden -March 2, 2013: -- Demand for pickups fueled a 3.7 percent rise in February vehicle sales, a continued sign of an improving U.S. housing market and consumer confidence despite some economic worries... Domestic and foreign automakers sold 1.19 million cars and light trucks in February, compared to 1.15 million the same month a year ago, according to results released Friday by Autodata Corp... It marked the 12th consecutive month of sales topping 1 million. Light-duty truck sales rose 7.8 percent, while car sales rose just 0.1 percent... The seasonally adjusted annualized selling rate in the U.S. was 15.38 million units, up from 14.5 million units a year ago. The momentum is expected to carry into March, analysts say...


*  Indiana - Chrysler Group, creating 1,250 jobs

Kokomo,IND,USA -The Detroit News, by Bryce G. Hoffman -March 1, 2013: -- Chrysler Group LLC announced Thursday it will invest nearly $374 million in central Indiana to boost production of automatic transmissions, a move the company said will create about 1,250 jobs... The automaker is spending $212 million on new equipment and tooling for three of its existing factories in Kokomo to produce eight-speed and nine-speed automatic transmissions. Chrysler is spending another $162 million to open a new transmission plant in the nearby town of Tipton that will produce an all-new nine-speed transmission... The new nine-speed transmissions built there will be more fuel-efficient than those with fewer gears... Thursday's announcement brings Chrysler's total U.S. investment to nearly $5.2 billion since Italian automaker Fiat SpA took over the bankrupt company in June 2009. Chrysler has already added some 8,000 jobs in the United States since then...

Warren,Macomb County,MICH,USA -The Detroit News, by Bryce G. Hoffman -March 1, 2013: -- About two dozen workers braved sleet and icy winds to protest a controversial new work schedule at Chrysler Group LLC's factories here Thursday. But the pickets may be the least of the company's worries... According to internal company reports, there are serious quality issues at Chrysler's Warren Truck Assembly Plant, which recently launched one of the automaker's most important new vehicles: the 2013 Ram 1500 pickup. And the morale problems sparked by the new shift schedule are only making these problems worse, according to workers... During the first hour of production Thursday, workers at the Warren truck plant built 58 pickups. But only 16 of those vehicles passed final inspection, according to company documents. Quality improved as the day went on, but just over half of the trucks assembled by the first shift were approved for shipment. A company source told that number should be at least 78 percent and higher than that to meet the plant's quality goals...
