* USA / Texas - Wrong-way drivers have researchers scrambling for prevention measures
San Antonio,TXS,USA -News 4 WOAI TV, by Jaie Avila -21 Feb 2011: -- Wrong-way drivers are causing deadly crashes in San Antonio and around the country. Most of the time the drivers are drunk, so you may think there's little that can be done to prevent wrong-way driving... Researchers have learned some interesting things about wrong-way drivers, who are usually impaired. They tend to keep their eyes down on the road directly in front of them, trying to keep it between the lines. So they may not see the standard seven-foot high traffic signs. The federal government is close to approving shorter, two foot high wrong-way signs in hopes they will keep drivers from using off ramps to enter highways going the wrong direction... Lately we've seen a lot of wrong-way drivers in the news. The video is always breathtaking. A wrong-way driver in California slammed right into the guardrail. An elderly driver in Bryan, Texas drove on the wrong side of the freeway for eight miles, but fortunately troopers stopped her before she crashed. Police in Irving tried everything to stop a wrong-way driver, even shining a spotlight on him. Eventually an officer had to crash into the guy to keep him from hurting others...

CARB’s Truck and Bus rule, also known as the “Retrofit Rule,” requires trucking fleets to install diesel particulate filters and upgrade their trucks beginning as early as January 2012 for some fleets... Small fleets with three or fewer diesel vehicles must report truck information on all their trucks now if they have any trucks with 1996 through 1999 model year engines...
