TRANSPORT & LOGISTIC NEWS * Denmark - Maersk's big gamble on the future

Maersk's decision to build 30 of the world's largest container vessels

Copenhagen,Denmark -Transport Intelligence, by Thomas Cullen -23 Feb 2011: -- Maersk's decision to build 30 of the world's largest container vessels is not just a PR spectacular, it is also a strategic move of considerable courage. In what is an attempt to grab an even larger market share, the Danish giant is taking some big risks...  The proposed vessels are more than a third larger than the biggest container ship presently afloat, itself a Maersk ship known as the Emma Maersk with a capacity of 13,000 TEU. A decision to commit to possibly 30 of them reflects enormous faith in the ability of the container shipping market to absorb equally enormous volumes...   The scale of new build and the size of the vessels being built suggests that the shipping sector sees a continuation of the growth and structure of world trade. If Maersk get its forecasts wrong it is laying itself open to problems as big as those seen in the depths of recession...
