APUs provide heating, cooling and electricity. So drivers don't need to idle their diesel engine during off road time. Helping trucks burn less fuel, and improve air quality... "Less emissions in the air, there's less noise, if a driver goes to shut down and he's near a residential area, there are fines associated with idling in a residential area, so there is great benefit to the driver and to willow run foods" said Bob McKay Fleet Mananger... Willow Run has installed the units on 5 of their 86 tractors... The Law goes into effect at the end of November...
* Arkansas - Firms back bill to electronically monitor truckers’ road hours
LittleRock,ARD,USA -Arkansas News Bureau -29 September 2010: -- Two Arkansas-based trucking companies are founding members of an industry coalition formed to support truck safety legislation introduced in Congress today... The measure, would require commercial truckers to use electronic recorders to track their driving hours, replacing manual log books now used under regulations that date to the 1930s... J.B. Hunt Transportation Services of Lowell and North Little Rock-based Maverick USA endorsed the legislation Wednesday... The companies are forming The Alliance for Driver Safety & Security, an industry coalition to urge passage of the legislation and other measures aimed at improving highway safety... Limits in place for when and how long commercial truckers may drive vary between 10 to 15 hours of driving time, depending on whether a passenger is aboard and the schedule... Some trucking companies already use electronic logs to ensure drivers comply with the hours-of-service regulations... The new bill would require companies to install an electronic device connected to the truck engine to identify the driver of the truck and record a driver’s duty status. The device also would be able to monitor the location and movement of the vehicle... The devices would be required on all commercial trucks within three years of the bill’s passage... * Kansas - YRCW Approves Teamsters Deal, Reverse Split
New York,NY,USA -Barrons, by Tiernan Ray -September 29, 2010: -- Trucking firm YRC Worldwide (YRCW) this afternoon said in an 8-K filing with the SEC that its board of directors approved a tentative agreement with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters representing the vast majority of its employees to extend a previous agreement expiring 2013 through March of 2015... The agreement will provide $350 million in savings per year, YRC said. The agreement will extend a freeze on YRC’s contribution to the pension plan, scheduled to expire this year, through June of next year, at which time YRC will contribute at the rate of 25% of the contribution rate in effect on July 1, 2009, it said... Among other provisions: Wage increases will be granted for 2013 and 2014, but reduced by a 15% wage reduction already negotiated; new rules are set for the workplace; health and welfare contributions are set at 35 cents per hour; the Teamsters are given approval authority over any change of control of the company, and over any future recapitalization of the company; and Teamsters will expand their board membership from one to two representatives...
