TRUCKERS' STORY * USA - Udall couple wins national trucker title
Dora and Gordon “Butch” Colvin have more than 17 years of team truck driving in common
Udal,KS,USA -The Winfield Daily Courier, by JEANIE KISTLER -March 31, 2010: ... This month Butch learned that he has won the grand prize for Trucker of the Year for 2009, an honor that Dora won in 2006. He is retiring on March 31 after driving for 50 years. Together, they have logged more than eight million miles. The contest in sponsored by the Truckload Carriers Association... Dora was the first woman to be named Company Equipment Driver of the Year by the Truckload Carriers Association and Truckers News... She blazed a trail for women by becoming the first woman in her Kansas county to hold a commercial driver’s license. For two trucking companies, she was their first woman driver. She had many obstacles but she met them head-on. In the 1960s and ’70s, highway patrolmen frequently stopped them when Dora was driving because they didn’t think she had a commercial license. That led to her driving mostly after dark... Butch’s father was a truck driver, and that was all he ever wanted to do. In his 50th year of trucking, Butch has seen a lot of changes in the industry in both comfort and service when needed... In addition to their safe driving record, the Colvins have been involved in testing components for the Kenworth Company — everything including tires, motors, transmissions, controls and an interior design that hasn’t come out yet... (Photo from Jeanie Kistler/Courier - Butch and Dora Colvin of Udall are pictured in their office where the walls are lined with awards and plaques. While working for Contract Freighters Inc., they won Team of the Year for two years in a row and set a record by being nominated six years in a row. The plaques they are holding are for Driver of the Year. )
* Oklahoma - A former Arrow Trucking worker has a dedication that knows no bounds
Tulsa,OK,USA -The Dallas Trucking Examiner, by Rhianna Weir -5 April 2010: -- She was a shocked as the rest the day she was told to pack up and leave. Wondering what the future held, this caring and wonderous woman did the impossible. She picked herself up; dusted herself off and went to work; only she didn't work for money or even recognition. She did what was right... That is the way many in the trucking community think when they hear the name, Donna Creekmore. This woman, during a time when she struggled with no income to speak of, as she was newly unemployed, a sick spouse and a big heart, took up the effort to help others... Donna worked tirelessly, day and night, with countless volunteers, too many to mention by name, to ensure that stranded drivers from Arrow Transport, found their way home. When the crisis was over, several weeks later, she did not stop there... Donna helped to found a new company for herself. Roadpro Services was born out of the chaos of the Arrow shutdown. The mission of this foundling company is to support drivers and to become the lifeline between the drivers and companies who would take advantage of them... Everyone in the trucking industry owes this woman a debt of gratitude, if not respect for her unwavering dedication to this industry and the drivers in it...
