TRUCKING ANALYSIS * USA & Canada - Trucking companies: struggling with overcapacity but seeing signals of recovery

With the reduction in fuel prices and excess capacity, US trucking companies are engaging in price wars and competing in the difficult environment to increase volumes

Conditions are predicted to improve, however, with anticipated increased business spending in the country set to boost demand for trucking services... The trucking industry in the US, including less-than-truckload (LTL) and full-truckload (TL) transport, has been seriously hit by weak demand. Truckload operations involving manufacturing and retail goods saw demand dwindling due to the low purchasing power of clients and the overall slowdown of the US economy. As a result of overcapacity in the market, the largest truck operators in the US have reported losses in 2009... To increase truckload volumes, many trucking companies, such as Old Dominion Freight Line (ODFL) and FedEx, slashed their prices during the year, leading to a decline in LTL rates of 5-15% compared to 2008. Although there has been a gradual revival in volumes, firms in the sector are yet to see a rise in profitability... Players in the LTL arena, on the other hand, are reporting worse than average seasonality in January...
