Not So Fast * Philippines - The curse of cheap vehicles

Especially with most local truck drivers being overworked, poorly trained and sometimes driving under the influence of drugs in a futile effort to stay awake, accidents are bound to happen, whichever side the steering wheel is on. But a truck converted from right to left hand drive is also more prone to accidents due to improper conversion... Despite the entry of low-priced Chinese trucks, the local market today is predominantly comprised of reconditioned trucks and local manufacturers are lucky to sell a few hundred new units a year... The result for us is a very small local new truck market that mainly services corporate accounts. This is because the buying habits of the trucking industry are different from the car market. Trucks are commodity, used purely for business, and there’s no such thing as a premium and luxury truck brand. Keeping an eye on costs, the price-buyer instinct rules... Maintenance schedules are extended, drivers are stretched, and road conditions be damned as long as he gets paid for hauling goods on time. Trucks are not like personal transport...
