* D.C. - U.S. Postal Service Lost $3.8 Billion in 2009. Revenue dives $6.8 billion as mail volume plunges 12.7 perce
Washington,DC,USA -The Journal of Commerce Online, by Thomas L. Gallagher -Nov 16, 2009: -- The U.S. Postal Service lost $3.8 billion in its fiscal year 2009, in what the chief financial officer called “one of the most challenging (years) in the history of the Postal Service”... Operating revenue dived $6.8 billion to $68.1 billion as volume plunged 12.7 percent to 177.1 billion pieces... Cost-cutting efforts resulted in $6 billion in savings and a $4 billion reduction in required payments for retiree health benefits, USPS said. The savings came through job losses for 40,000 career USPS employees as well as reductions in overtime hours, transportation and other costs... Despite the savings, this year’s deficit topped last year’s by $1 billion...
* Georgia - UPS Says Holiday Volume to Grow. Carrier predicts 400 million packages this year, up slightly from 2008 season

Gallagher -Nov 16, 2009: -- UPS, the world’s largest package delivery company, expects to carry 400 million packages worldwide during the holiday season between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year... UPS said that number is slightly higher than last year, when the peak season contracted. The forecast is in line with a projection from the National Retail Federation that U.S. holiday volume in retail stores will gain by just 1 percent over last year’s level... * Tennessee - FedEx Freight to Test Zero Emission Truck. Vision Industries to reconfigure truck as electric/hydrogen hybrid

Gallagher -Nov 16, 2009: -- FedEx Freight, the less-than-truckload division of FedEx, agreed to a partnership with Vision Industries to test a tractor powered by the hydrogen/electric hybrid Tyrano drive train... Under the agreement, Vision Industries will configure a FedEx Freight tractor with its zero emission plug-in electric/hydrogen fuel cell hybrid Tyrano drive train. * California - - Trucker ABF, Teamsters in Concession Talks. Carrier expects to win wage concessions similar to givebacks at YRC
Anaheim,CAL,USA -The Journal of Commerce Online -Nov 17, 2009: -- Less-than-truckload carrier ABF Freight System is deep in talks with the Teamsters union to win concessions similar to those the union gave financially troubled competitor YRC Worldwide, including an overhaul of the company’s pension system, the carrier said... The carrier expects to win wage concessions similar to the givebacks that lowered wages some 15 percent at YRC, the nation’s largest LTL operator. ABF also wants to restructure the company’s pension system by switching to a profit-sharing arrangement to match the savings YRC is gaining from an 18-month hiatus from contributing to the driver pension plan... The agreement between the Teamsters and YRC negotiated a couple of months ago, said ABF Chief Operating Officer Wesley R. Kemp , “was just too great a difference to ignore” between the cost structures at the country’s only large unionized LTL carriers...

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters said no talks are under way with ABF Freight System that would result in concessions for its members... "There is an erroneous media report that the International Brotherhood of Teamsters National Freight Division is in negotiations with ABF that would result in concessions for our members represented under the National Master Freight Agreement," Teamsters National Freight Director, Tyson Johnson, said in a statement today. "Let me be clear – this report is false," he said...

* Texas & Indiana - Knight, Celadon Resist Pressure to Cut Capacity. Maintaining fleets increases long-term potential in recovery, carriers say
El Paso,TX and Indianapolis,IN,USA - The Journal of Commerce Online, by William B. Cassidy -Nov 17, 2009: -- Not all motor carriers see cutting excess capacity as the best road to higher rates and improved profitability. Knight Transportation and Celadon Group are among those holding onto trucks and banking on being able to pick up freight from competitors in a recovery... Celadon actually increased its tractor fleet 8.5 percent year-over-year in the quarter, bringing it up to 3,221 units, while decreasing the number of trucks it owns by about 600, the Indianapolis-based carrier said in its report... Other carriers are transforming their equipment pools... USA Truck grew its owner-operator fleet by 58.9 percent in the quarter, to 143 units...
