Engineers to study Bayonne Bridge clearance for larger vessels in 2014
New York,NY,USA -The Journal of Commerce, by Thomas L. Gallagher -Aug 14, 2009: -- The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Board of Commissioners on Aug. 13 authorized up to $10 million for analysis of navigational issues posed by larger ships coming in 2014 that may have difficulty fitting under the Bayonne Bridge... Engineering services will develop options to deal with the bridge’s low clearance, which may prevent ships from passing under it to reach the Port of New York and New Jersey’s container terminals west of the bridge. The planning and engineering efforts will take approximately one to one and a half years... Much larger containerships are expected to call on the bi-state port after the Panama Canal is expanded in 2014... (Photo from en.structurae.de)
* Bridge to somewhere
Minneapolis,MN,USA -Land Line Magazine -August 14, 2009: -- Just 11 months after winning the contract to design and build the new I-35W bridge, Figg Engineering Group cut the ribbon on a new era in technology, innovation and design life, which is sure to influence the way lawmakers at all levels think about bridges... The $234 million bridge is a partnership of the Minnesota Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, Flatiron-Manson, Figg Engineering and a number of subcontractors and suppliers who used local labor and materials whenever possible... The quick turnaround time, three months ahead of schedule, could be attributed to smooth sailing through the usual red tape, but the designer also credits the decision to fabricate the bridge segments on-site...
