WASH,USA -Land Line Magazine, by Clarissa Kell-Holland -November 21, 2008: -- Already cash-strapped trucking companies in Washington state were dealt a blow in late September when they received a letter from the state’s Department of Labor and Industries announcing that workers’ compensation rates would likely go up in 2009... However, several state lawmakers – including Rep. Lynn Kessler, D-24th Dist., have vowed to fight against the workers’ compensation rate increases, which she said could put some struggling businesses under if they are approved... Kessler, who is majority leader in the House, said she spoke with Gov. Chris Gregoire about the rate hikes on Thursday, Nov. 20, and said she told her “this is a really bad time to be raising rates”...


* Sioux Falls company’s trucks ordered off the road

A federal judge has ordered a Sioux Falls trucking company to pull its rigs from the road because it’s not carrying liability insurance, according to a court order

Action Carrier Inc. already was on probation because of earlier violations.U.S. District Judge Lawrence Piersol on Thursday granted U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters’ motion for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction against the motor carrier.The order prevents the company from operating without a liability insurance policy that covers bodily injury and property damage and without operating authority from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration...


* Ohio Invests In Job Stimulus Program For Logistics Firms

OH,USA -WCPO, by Tom McKee -21 Nov 2008: -- There was mixed news for Ohio's economy Friday... On one hand, the unemployment rate was 7.3% for October, up slightly from 7.2% in September... That was tempered by the announcement from Governor Ted Strickland of a $100 million investment for the state's logistics and distribution industries... It's part of the $1.57 billion Ohio Bipartisan Jobs Stimulus Plan approved earlier this year by the Ohio General Assembly... * Truckers warn of shakeout over CARB rule - Tougher diesel emissions rule planned

Sacramento,CAL,USA -The Central Valley Business Times -November 21, 2008: -- A California truckers’ group warns there will be widespread business failures in their industry if the California Air Resources Board approves a tougher rule for emissions from diesel engines... CARB is set to vote in three weeks on the rule that could see virtually every diesel truck and bus operating in California having their engines replaced or retrofitted with air pollution control devices starting in 2010... The trucking industry says the upgrading and replacement will cost $5.5 billion “at a time when there is little to no access to capital to finance engine retrofits or replacements”... Bob Ramorino, president of the California Trucking Association and president of Roadstar Trucking in Hayward, says this will prompt a widespread shakeout in the industry...
