TRUCKERS' STRIKES * WORLDWIDE

* Australia - ‘Volatile’ truckers’ forum expected

Dubbo truckers could vote on Sunday to stop driving, at a forum the organisers are already expecting to be “volatile”
Dubbo,New South Wales,Australia -The Dubbo Daily Liberal, by LYNTON GRACE -30 June 2008: -- More than 350 truckers are expected at the forum, one of several held across Australia... From midnight on July 27 up to two thirds of the nation’s trucking industry could be facing a shutdown if the Australian Government doesn’t meet a list of 17 demands, essentially to repeal the new National Transport Reforms... Deliveries of food, petrol, and other supplies are all at risk... The demands include what organiser Mick Pattel calls unfair log book breaches that attract the loss of demerit points, and the complete removal of the Australian Trucking Organisation (ATO)... A key issue for NSW truckies is the rising cost of registration for B-doubles... Previously, trucking companies had been able to register in the ACT or Northern Territory to take advantage of cheaper registration. That’s been negated now by national legislation... And while Mr Pattel concedes the change is “probably not a bad thing”, he’s concerned about the sudden rise some companies face for registration... “It’ll be massive increases for B-doubles - $8000 to $14,000,” he said. “Guys are running six to 20 B-doubles, they’ll just park them and go back to one trailer... “It means for every B-double off the road, there will be another prime mover on the road - which is more trucks on road and more pollution.”... That problem would be compounded by an industry-wide driver shortage, he said... ( Picture: Most of the transport industry could be shut down if truckies walk off the job. A forum will be held in Dubbo tomorrow so truck drivers can decide what their action will be)

* Australia - ATA: Going on strike is no answer

Adelaide,Australia -Transport Logistics News -30 June 2008: -- Despite the hardships currently faced by the trucking industry, the proposed two-week shutdown from July 28 is not the answer, the Australian Trucking Association (ATA) said... ATA chairman Trevor Martyn said while trucking companies are in crisis due to the spiralling price of diesel, going on strike would not provide a solution to their difficulties... He said instead of seeking an ineffective measure, trucking operators need to devise reasonable strategies by reviewing their costs on a weekly basis and negotiating with customers to lift freight rates...

* India - Truckers can't hold country to ransom

Gurgaon,Haryana,India -The Economic Times -1 Jul, 2008: -- The All India Motor Transport Congress’ (AIMTC) call for a nationwide indefinite strike from tomorrow is clearly aimed at pushing the government to the wall. Any disruption in commercial transport is bound to aggravate the already serious price situation. Far from winning public support for their cause, this will only end up alienating the public... Whatever the merits of the truckers’ demands — and except in the case of service tax on goods transport agents (GTAs) there are none — a strike is not the way to go. The government must stand firm. For too long have truckers been a law unto themselves. In the past too, opposition to the hike in motor insurance tariffs, saw de-tariffing of motor insurance alone being kept in abeyance even as tariffs on all other forms of general insurance were freed...

* WORLDWIDE - Truckers, motorcyclists overseas protest fuel costs

Grain Valley,MO,USA -The Associated Press /Land Line Magazine -July 1, 2008: -- Truckers in several countries overseas have resumed their protests of high diesel fuel prices, and motorcyclists in Scotland have also gotten into the act... In France truckers are using a combination of blockades and slow-moving convoys to tie up traffic. Their union leaders say that 40 separate protests are being conducted around the country... In Australia, a convoy of about 100 trucks slowed down traffic on a major highway Tuesday, July 1. Most of the truckers are owner-operators, but they belong to a union that has threatened a nationwide shut-down on July 27 if their demands – which include fuel compensation – aren’t met. The price of diesel in Australia is about $7.40 a gallon... Meanwhile, in Scotland, about 300 motorcyclists rode in a protest convoy over the weekend. A spokesman said the bikers are “fed up” with the high price of gas... And in Lincolnshire, England, trucks took part recently in a fuel price protest convoy along some of the region's busiest roads. The protest organizer told the BBC News that the trucking industry, for maybe five years, has been asking the government to reduce the tax on fuel...
