TRUCKMAKERS NEWS * USA - Volvo to lay off workers at truck plant

Dublin,VA,USA -The Detroit News -18 April 2008: -- Volvo Trucks North America plans to lay off up to 1,100 employees from its southwest Virginia plant next month and reduce production there to one shift... Company spokesman Jim McNamara says the layoffs are expected to begin the week of May 12... The 1.6-million-square-foot New River plant is Volvo's largest truck factory and employs 2,900 workers. The news comes the same day Toyota subsidiary Hino Motors Ltd . said it will stop making commercial trucks at its California plant because surging oil prices and the U.S. credit crisis have hurt demand...


* USA - Detroit Diesel Offers Free Upgrades for ’07 Engines

Detroit,Mich,USA -Transport Topics - 18 April 2008: -- Engine maker Detroit Diesel Corp. said Friday that it will soon make a new software release available free to its customers that will boost the fuel economy of its 2007 Series 60 engines... The company said the improvements will increase fuel economy by up to 2.5%... Fleet owners and owner-operators can schedule a visit to any DDC dealer or distributor to have their 2007 Series 60 engines re-flashed at no cost, beginning July 1... Series 60 engines produced after July 1 will automatically be programmed for the modified regeneration cycle, DDC said... Detroit Diesel Corp. is a unit of Daimler AG...
