TAXES * Canada - Ontario to fight proposed U.S. tax

The Michigan tax would slap $1,000 each on Ontario trucks

London,ONT,CAN -The London Free Press, by CHIP MARTIN -March 21, 2008: -- Already reeling from a high Canadian dollar, Ontario manufacturers are facing the threat of a new Michigan business tax aimed at firms that move goods into that state... With Ontario-Michigan trade worth more than $65 billion a year, the tax has prompted howls of protest by Premier Dalton McGuinty, the Ontario Trucking Association and MPP Pat Hoy of Chatham-Kent-Essex, among others... McGuinty has complained the tax "could impede trade and worsen current economic difficulties."... The tax, effective Jan. 1, would mean a levy of about $1,000 per truck entering Michigan on companies that do business there, but have no permanent premises there... Meanwhile, in a letter to Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm last month, McGuinty appealed for tax reciprocity between the two trading partners. He noted Ontario doesn't tax Michigan firms that don't have premises in Ontario...
