European Union finalizing pollution-cutting legislation; have profound impact on automakers
London,UK -The Financial Times -December 9, 2007: -- Europe's biggest automakers calling for global deal on climate change. Calling for coherent public policies; encourage buyers to choose carbon lowering technologies... Wants average emissions of cars cut by 25% to 120g of carbon dioxide / km by 2012. France, Germany likely to block legislation; must be approved by majority of 27 member states... Draft emissions-cutting legislation in Europe puts too much of burden on automakers... EU abandoned voluntary agreement w/ industry to cut car emissions. Premium producers would have to bear lion's share of burden... Commission says they can pass cost increases on to wealthy customers...
