She could be an executive, a banker or a public relations person. Butm the former Antigonish native now living in Calgary certainly doesn’t look like the long-haul trucker she is.. You would also not think she drives in that outfit, but she does, all the time... “The way you see me today is the way I am," she says. “I have 28 dresses and 14 pairs of shoes in my truck. I was never a pants girl. I had to buy a pair to go to trucking school. My mum says as a kid I was the only child hanging from a tree in a skirt"... Claire’s been driving a massive truck across Canada and the United States for the last four years. She’s one of two Canadian female drivers with U.S.-based Hayl Trucking, which has a yard in Calgary, where Claire is based, and five in the States... How did this 51-year-old find her dream job? And why? Look back to 2002... Claire’s been a single mother all her adult life. Two sons, Marcel, now 31, and Jean-Marc, 29, were already out of the house. Daughter Laura, 18, has just passed away from pulmonary fibrosis, or lung scarring, which was diagnosed after a bout of viral pneumonia when she was seven months old... She remembers, a few months after Laura died, telling her mother, “Momma, don’t laugh at me but I want to drive a truck"... Claire is living her fantasy...
