* Bush Signs Mexican Trucks Restrictions Into Law. Measure Highlights Safety Concerns
Washington,DC,USA -Transport Topics /Associated Press -30 May 2007: -- President Bush has signed a bill into law setting restrictions on the government’s pilot program to allow Mexican trucks access to U.S. highways, reported... The measure signed Friday, includes requirements such as a certification from the Department of Transportation’s inspector general that safety and inspection requirements be met before the pilot program can begin, AP said... DOT had wanted to start a one-year pilot this year, and if successful, fully open the border to Mexican truck...
* USA - Doubt cast on future of cross-border trucking
San Antonio,TX,USA -My San Antonio, by Meena Thiruvengadam -31 May 2007: -- A controversial provision of the North American Free Trade Agreement that would allow Mexican trucks access to U.S. roadways may never happen, a South Texas congressman said Thursday in San Antonio... "I don't know if we're ever going to have cross-border trucking," Rep. Charlie Gonzalez, D-San Antonio, said at the Free Trade Alliance San Antonio's annual free-trade luncheon... Under NAFTA, Mexican trucks were to get access to highways in four U.S. border states by 1995. By 2000, Mexican and U.S. carriers were supposed to have full access to one another's roadways. But more than a decade of controversy over the safety and potential environmental effects of Mexican trucks has kept that from happening... Early this year, the Department of Transportation proposed a pilot that would allow a test of NAFTA's cross-border trucking provisions, but a measure signed into law last week will keep that project from going forward as initially planned... "The U.S. is in violation of NAFTA," Gonzalez said... The measure, part of emergency war-funding legislation, would increase the regulations under which such a cross-border trucking pilot could be carried out. The measure "pulls the rug out from under the secretary of transportation's plans," Gonzalez said...
