* Diesel users beginning to see impact of new EPA rule
Redwood Falls,MN,USA -Redwood Falls Gazette, by Erik Posz -June 10, 2006: -- Fuel prices are once again going up just in time for summer vacations and the travel season... For most of us the prices are bothersome and irritating, but for those who are professional drivers the high fuel prices are cutting deeply into their pocketbooks... What is more than likely going to drive diesel prices even higher is the fact that the Enviromental Protection Agency is in its last month of phasing in highly restrictive sulfur standards at refineries... In 2000, the EPA moved ahead on its rule to make heavy-duty trucks and buses run cleaner, and the Highway Diesel Rule (the "2007 Highway Rule"), was finalized in January 2001... According to the rule, beginning with the 2007 model year, the harmful pollution from heavy-duty highway vehicles must be reduced by more than 90 percent... Almost no one will argue that a cleaner burning diesel engine is a bad thing, however, diesel prices are expected to be on average $0.38 per gallon more than it was at its high last summer. That alone leaves room for argument...
* Trucks get dose of ULSD
Waterbury,CT,USA -Waterbury Republican American, by ANUSHA SHRIVASTAVA -June 11, 2006: -- For trucker Glenn Bertrand, the introduction of ultra-low sulfur diesel, or ULSD, means just one thing -- an increase in prices... "Diesel used to be cheaper than unleaded gas," said Bertrand, who owns GM Fine Arts Security Transport in Beacon Falls... "That may not be the case now. I'm going to have no choice but to raise prices too"... This cleaner fuel is scheduled to be available nationwide by Oct. 15, 2006, before new diesel vehicles are introduced to meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's 2007 emissions standards. The fuel can be used in all diesel engines with little or no modification to the engine or fuel system... While trucks and buses will switch to ULSD beginning in October, off-road diesel vehicles -- such as farm and construction equipment -- will see their emission requirements be phased in from 2007 to 2010...
