Limit - Canada - Trucking industry split over speed-limiters

Bid to slow big rigs

Canada -National Post/Financial Post, by Chris Sorensen -Feb 28, 2006: -- The Canadian Trucking Alliance will put forward a proposal this week to limit truckers driving faster than 105 kilometres per hour on the country's highways -- a controversial plan that is pitting large trucking firms against drivers who own their rigs... "We absolutely don't condone speeding and we would welcome tougher enforcement," said Joanne Ritchie, the executive director of the Owner-Operators' Business Association of Canada, which represents about 40,000 independent truck drivers. "But what we're opposed to is government regulation because there is absolutely no need for it."... In addition to the threat of being pulled over by police, Ms. Ritchie says private owner-operators have a strong incentive to drive at reduced speeds since the money saved on diesel fuel goes straight into their pockets...
