Analysts fear early retirements at automakers, suppliers will create a shortage of skilled workers
Monroe,Wis.,USA -The Detroit News-By Josee Valcourt -15 Nov 2005: -- Dave Mabe took nearly 32 years of experience with him when he recently accepted an early retirement package from Ford Motor Co.... By itself, Mabe's departure may not leave a gaping hole at the Monroe chassis plant where he worked as a shipment checker until Oct. 31.... But as thousands of experienced factory workers accept buyouts and early retirement packages from Detroit's shrinking automakers and parts suppliers, industry executives and experts are warning of a brain drain... A survey to be released today found that senior automotive executives believe a looming skilled labor shortage is one of the most serious issues facing the industry in the next five to 10 years and could cost companies tens of millions of dollars...
