Fines - Georgia/Europe - Tightening belts on overweight trucks

Alkhazashvili -Nov 17, 2005: -- With new roads being paved, the government has decided it is also necessary to place some regulations on some of the main culprits for road degradation: heavy trucks... According to the changes if a driver is carrying cargo in excess of the maximum weight allowance then he will be fined GEL 1000. The changes will take effect from January 2006... For 2005 the national budget allotted GEL 61 million for roads reconstruction and rehabilitation. At the beginning of November, only GEL 7 million was left from this amount. It should be mentioned however that while Tbilisi's roads are showing immense progress, roads in the regions have suffered from a string of natural calamities...
