Cuts to salaried staff outlined in memo
Detroit,Mich,USA -Detroit Free Press, by SARAH A. WEBSTER -Aug 30, 2005: -- Ford Motor Co. is cutting its white-collar staff by 2,750, expects that about 400 of they it plans to eliminate this year will be forced layoffs... Cutting employees in this manner is an unusual move for the automaker... Internal memo said that the overall number of job reductions at Ford will result in a substantial change to the company's business model, "eliminating some of our historic structure, combining common operations wherever possible and reprioritizing our resources... We have been recruiting on a limited basis for critical skill positions that cannot be filled from within the company, such as engineers for our hybrid vehicle programs. We're also doing limited hiring in organizations that are under-running their budget and that require resources to run the business."
