Low Emission Zone * UK - Norwich could expand it to include trucks

Transport bosses in Norwich are looking at whether trucks should be included as part of the City's Low Emission Zone (LEZ)

Norwich,UK -The Road Transport/Commercial Motor, by Roger Brown -3 November 2008: -- ... Although only buses and coaches fall under the city's LEZ at present, it is possible the scheme could be expanded, depending on its success, according to Chris Mitchell, LEZ manager for Norfolk County Council... The aim is to deliver specific reductions in emissions of nitrogen oxides, small particulates, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons... Currently, the main focus for reducing lorry emissions - through fewer journeys into the city centre - is the Norwich Freight Consolidation Centre, located to the southwest of the city and operated by Foulger Transport... Smaller HGVs are allowed to drive in the city's bus lanes provided they are using the consolidation centre... Mitchell adds: "This measure encourages retailers to use the consolidation centre as deliveries during congested periods can be guaranteed at a time rather than longer distance arrivals getting stuck in peak hour traffic."...

Low Emission Zone * UK - London: What it means for Haulage Workers

London,UK -ArticleBiz.com, by Luke Davies -26 Feb 2008: -- The London Low Emission Zone has now officially come into effect. Quite a few readers will doubtless be asking what it is, what it does, and how it will effect haulage companies and owner operators if media reports of the public being unaware of its existence are to be believed... Unsurprisingly, its something our members are beginning to grumble about, and it will only increase as more haulage vehicles are encompassed by the London Low Emissions Zone. For the moment though, it’s best to be aware of the restrictions so you can avoid the heavy fees levied for vehicles in the capital. My (slightly biased) advice to all concerned about the LEZ is to join a freight exchange, and swap loads to either make paying £200 a day worthwhile, or to take on work exclusively away from London to avoid the charges altogether... London,UK -This is Local London -28 Feb 2008: -- Hi-tech removal vehicles are to be introduced along some of London's busiest roads in the latest move to reduce congestion in the capital... Transport for London's latest scheme will see 21 trucks operate along the city's red route network , which its figures show carry around a third of the capital's traffic... The new trucks are fitted with satellite navigation and automatic number plate recognition software. Parking attendants will be able to call on the trucks to remove vehicles parked illegally or blocking the road... Abandoned vehicles will also be picked up by the trucks and moved to one of nine vehicle pounds situated cross London. The scheme will see 24 hour patrolling and removal of vehicles...

Most Polluting Trucks * UK - London to Impose $394-a-Day Charge on

London,UK -Bloomberg, by Brian Lysaght -Feb. 1, 2008: -- London, which has the dirtiest air in Britain, will impose a 200 pound-a-day ($394) charge on the most polluting trucks starting Feb. 4 in an effort to improve health... The low-emission zone, which will be the world's largest, uses a network of 90 cameras to monitor license plate numbers and catch truck owners who haven't paid the charge. Vehicles that meet European Union emissions standards are exempt. The zone takes in most of the area within the M25 motorway that encircles the U.K. capital...

Low Emission Zone * UK - 10,000 Lorries not compliant with London one?

London,UK -TNN -31 Jan 2008: -- The Freight Transport Association is concerned that as many as 10,000 vehicles working in and around London may not yet be compliant with the new Transport for London Low Emission Zone scheme, which comes into force next Monday 4 February. Vehicles which do not meet the required low emission levels face the prospect of paying a £200 per day charge or a penalty of £1,000... The scheme initially requires vehicles of over 12 tonnes to meet Euro 3 emission standards for particulate matter in order to operate freely within the area bordered by the M25. It is estimated that each day some 50,000 vehicles are used to deliver goods and services to businesses and consumers within the Greater London area. However, it is possible that as many as 10,000 vehicles and their operators either do not meet the required standard or, despite efforts from the transport industry and from Transport for London, are still not aware of the scheme...
