TRUCKMAKERS' NEWS WORLDWIDE * Sweden - Volvo says to cut 900 more jobs in

Company cuts jobs at unit as demand slackens. 700 blue-collar and 200 white-collar workers to go

Stockholm,Sweden -Reuters/The Guardian (UK), by Niklas Pollard & Johannes Hellstrom -November 11 2008: -- World number two truck maker Volvo AB is cutting 900 jobs in its Powertrain unit in Sweden, the group said on Tuesday, as it seeks to cut costs in the face of a sharp downturn in some of its main markets... The Swedish company is shedding thousands of jobs as it adapts to a plunge in demand in Europe, its biggest market, where the global financial crisis has left fleet operators starved of credit and wary of purchasing new trucks...

* USA - Navistar banking on EGR for 2010

Warrenville,ILL,USA -Fleet Owner, by Justin Carretta -Nov 10, 2008: -- Navistar, the only U.S. engine maker that intends to only use EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) to meet EPA 2010 emissions regulations rather than add SCR (selective catalytic reduction), said using EGR alone is a simpler solution for personnel, technicians and drivers... According to Tim Shick, Navistar director of business and product strategy, the SCR approach does improve fuel economy, but he said the company’s research showed by volume the amount of urea added equals the amount of diesel fuel saved. Additionally, SCR requires more sensors and diagnostics, additional hardware “and a complex control strategy,” he said... Also, Shick said urea is not available at all fueling stations, and it’s hard to predict what prices for it will be, adding that an SCR system will add 400 lbs. to the truck and will require extra training for all technicians and drivers on how to use the system... Navistar’s EGR solution is different, Shick said, noting that it is “a mature technology with a proven track record”... According to Navistar, EGR has no adverse economic impact over the product lifecycle, no added weight or urea distribution concerns, and reduces operational maintenance and serviceability issues...

* Germany - Mercedes Unveils Luxurious New Actros Trust Edition Semi For Euro-Trash Truckers

Stuttgart,Germany -Jalopnik (USA) -11 Nov 2008: -- Apparently the luxury car market was at just the level of saturation necessary for Daimler to shift it's steely blue eyes further up the size scale, with a new on-off special edition semi, the Mercedes Benz Actros 1860 Trust Edition... This special edition truck has been customized into the ultimate trucker's paradise by Proceda, a German design firm. Most of the ridiculous excess lives in the cabin, with "bordeaux-red" leather, chrome trim, and fancy door inserts. The most ridiculous part? Perhaps it's Proceda upholsterer Stefan Jörg using a special sewing machine to produce the stitching for the distinctive honeycomb design on the seats. If not, then check out the Trust Edition carpet on the engine tunnel and the floor mats — both are equally stylish. We suppose this is the perfect way to celebrate the downturn in the heavy truck industry...
