DANGEROUS DRIVER * Japan - Trucking company head charged with negligence

Higashi-Osaka,Osaka,Japan -The Yomiuri Shimbun -7 March 2008: -- The president of a trucking company in Higashi-Osaka, Osaka Prefecture, has been charged with professional negligence resulting in death in connection with a fatal accident involving a driver employed by the firm... Police have sent papers to prosecutors regarding the 47-year-old president, alleging the firm's failure to verify an employee truck driver was fit for duty led to an accident in which two middle school students were killed... Two female middle school students were heading to school at 6:55 a.m. on Oct. 12 in Kyotango, Kyoto Prefecture, when they were fatally hit by a truck driven by Daisuke Kawabata, 22... According to the police, Kawabata had visited a karaoke bar on the night of Oct. 10, not leaving until the following morning. He was suffering from lack of sleep on Oct. 12, but the company did not inquire about his condition before sending him to work...
