Controls - USA - Trucking firm under federal review

Investigation planned before fatal Toll Road crash

South Bend,IN,USA -South Bend Tribune, by JOSHUA STOWE -16 Aug 2006: -- Federal investigators are taking a close look at the trucking firm that employed the semi-truck driver police found at fault in the recent accident that killed five people on the Indiana Toll Road... The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration had scheduled a compliance review for Wisconsin-based Millis Transfer Inc. before the crash, but the fatal accident would have automatically triggered such a review anyway, according to an agency spokesman... The compliance review, which should wrap up this week, is a “top-to-bottom” audit, DeBruyne said, in which investigators examine all aspects of a company — everything from its driver logbooks to its drug-testing programs and insurance information... The FMCSA’s Web site indicates that Millis Transfer has a vehicle inspection rating better than the national average, and a driver inspection rating slightly worse than the national average... According to the latest numbers on the site, 12.2 percent of the firm’s vehicles have been placed out of service after inspections; the national average for companies of a similar size is 22.92 percent... Meanwhile, 8.6 percent of Millis Transfer’s inspected drivers have been placed out of service. The national average is 6.78 percent...
