Commentary: Strong design might yet save automaker

BERKELEY, Calif.,USA -MarketWatch, by John C. Dvorak -July 5, 2006: -- With shareholder Kirk Kerkorian making waves at GM regarding a strategic alliance with Renault and Nissan, there has been talk centering around the skills and impact of Carlos Ghosn... Ghosn, a designated hitter from Renault, is credited with turning around Nissan with a series of restructurings... Now there are some rumblings about his doing his magic at GM. When you read the debate about all this it seems that nobody is paying attention to Ghosn's real contribution: making a product that doesn't look like garbage -- a product that people actually want to own... Let's look at what Steve Jobs did when he took over the reins of Apple . In essence it wasn't much except add life and desirability in the form of modern industrial design to a flagging product line...
